Originally, Maitake was a common and popular edible and medicinal mushroom in Japan that grows on tree roots, primarily old oak roots. With its large fruiting body consisting of many small grey to grey-brown felt caps, the mushroom is able to perfectly blend into its environment, making it difficult to detect in nature.
The mushroom, which is also known under the name hen-of-the-woods, has a pleasant taste with an intense mushroom flavour, and is now also cultivated in North America and Europe in addition to Japan.
